Anghiari

Anghiari is a splendid medieval village in the Valtiberina, one of the most beautiful villages in Italy, theater of the Battle of Anghiari fought in 1440 between the Florentines and the Milanese, allowing Florence to assume the government of the city. Before entering we admire the clock tower, called Campano, which together with the ancient keep is the main element for the urban passage in the village. From the Giardini del Vicario a window opens onto the whole surrounding landscape and crossing a series of alleys, we arrive in Piazza del Popolo where the Palazzo Pretorio dominates with its facade decorated with frescoes and coats of arms of the vicars and commissioners of various eras. We reach the Badia, the mother church of Anghiari, the first place of worship in Anghiari. Continuing our walk we arrive in the heart, in the historic center of Anghiari, the Borghetto. This square is framed by palaces and homes of noble families, medieval tower-houses and the characteristic staircase that leads up to the Campano. A perfect mix between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. There are two museums in the square: Palazzo Taglieschi and Palazzo della Battaglia. The church of Sant’Agostino is part of the walls of Anghiari, with its apse resting above the fortification of the village and configured as a bastion, visible from the outside, which makes the image of Anghiari unique and characteristic. We then arrive in Piazza Baldaccio, and looking out from the square, you can have a view of the landscape of the Valtiberina through a 6-kilometer fourteenth-century road that connects Anghiari with Sansepolcro.
